Sally Ride Science instructor Shirli Cohen visited FOX 5 News recently for a segment previewing the Sally Ride Science Junior Academy, which runs from June 24 to July 19. The Junior Academy offers dozens of innovative STEAM workshops for students in grades 4-12.
Cohen previewed “Space Tango: Quest Institute.” In this 4-week course, high school students will explore the science of heating and cooling by building and programming experiments in radiation, convection and conduction. Students will build the hardware for each experiment using heating bulbs, resistors, and temperature sensors. Then students will program the experiments in the Arduino environment and C programming language. Finally, students will upload their experiment configurations to the International Space Station and analyze the resulting data to see how microgravity affects different types of heat transfer.
The workshop is made possible by a partnership with Space Tango and the Quest Institute.
